I'm in Boise.
Lots of stuff happened before I left I guess, going away party etc...but that all feels far away.
The road trip (condensed):
Went up to Niagara, accidentally crossed into Canada, saw Alfonso briefly, went through Ohio, saw Oberlin, ate Shistawouk, let Siri run around Wilder Bowl, stopped in Toledo, saw Greer (yay!) and his housemates, drank whiskey, drove through Indiana and Illinois, saw lots of truckers, got lost in the ghetto in Chicago for a minute, went through a massive thunderstorm in Wisconsin, saw Sulman, met his parents, they made us cookies which I accidentally left on the couch :( - I'm lame, went through South Dakota, it's flat, saw the sketchiest trucker stop ever, slept in the Badlands, heard coyotes, it rained in the morning and we had to scramble to get all of our stuff back in the car - Kristy didn't have the rain fly for her tent...at least it didn't rain while we were sleeping, drove through more South Dakota, drove through Wyoming, got to Yellowstone at night, saw a little wolf, realized the food we bought in Madison was soaked, it was cold, woke up in Yellowstone, drove around and saw lots of pretty things like mountains, and steam coming out of the ground and bubbling mud...saw Old Faithful explode, drove out of Yellowstone, through the Tetons - they were amazing, drove through Jackson Hole, stopped for coffee, almost took a picture to send to Jesse...but were antsy to get to Boise, crossed the Tetons, got a little off course cause I got distracted by pretty mountains, then it was more flat, but prettier than South Dakota, and you could see the smoke coming up in the distance from the fires in the forest, and now I'm in Boise...for the next five days...then Seattle.
not editing this cause I'm being antisocial. <3 |

| the fourth of July... |
[Jul. 5th, 2007|12:41 am] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | apathetic | ] | Haven't posted in a while - not entirely sure why.
Watched the fireworks from a rooftop surrounded by hipsters to the sound of someone playing an accordian. The view was pretty awesome. There were fireworks launching from various rooftops all around us and then Radek and some other kids started shotting them off the rooftop we were on. On of the fireworks got misdirected and flew towards Kristy, Radek, and Aubri - Julia and I were already standing off to a side - and poor Aubri's dress got ruined and her knee got burned.
Last year I didn't celebrate the fourth of July - I was in London and kind of forgot.
I don't have much else to say - my life is very...transitory and boring right now. |

| my girls... |
[Jun. 15th, 2007|06:19 am] |
Last night was amazing. Somehow a bunch of us ended up congregating at Midway and enjoyed the Aubri's amazing hospitality. Good friends, pretty girls, silly short swiss french boys - with whom I tried to speak French but kept coming out with words in Romanian, bagels, and lots of Jack and Coke. I was hoping Gogol would show, but ultimately their absence didn't lessen then amazingness of the evening.
I had a conversation with Mehdi later about my friends and how, in general, I'm very picky about the people I let in - I mean really let in - and how initially I tend not to get along better with girls than guys - however ultimately I have collected the most amazing group of trustworthy and supportive ladies in my life.
I love them, it's pretty awesome, and I'm glad to have them supporting me. |

[May. 7th, 2007|10:00 pm] |
So, today I was having a conversatino with Antonis in which I said I was 80% sure that I was going to Seattle...then I got this and it just sent me all back into confusion again...
I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!! (and it's so hard to think about it on the other side of the world). *sigh*
'Re: Boston College Law School Priority Waiting List
We are writing to let you know how things are going with admissions for this fall's entering class. Presently, it appears we will be admitting some candidates from the priority waiting list during the next few months. As you may know, some admitted applicants pay deposits to more than one law school and past experience indicates that seats in our entering class will become available for this reason.
If you haven't done so already, please feel free to send us any additional materials in support of your application. These could include information regarding your employment, professional activities, and academic honors, or updated LSDAS reports with final transcripts.
If you have made other plans and no longer wish to remain on the priority waiting list, please let us know by reply email.
We appreciate your patience during this process. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

I know.
I've been bad.
One of those...too much to write rather than not enough...
and I will not be satisfying at the moment either.
I do want to say this - official romania blog is up. I might cross post here, but I haven't decided.

[Feb. 16th, 2007|01:36 pm] |
Yesterday I started to write a reflection on the interesting interaction between immigrant communities living close proximity, because I've sort of been around it recently...
but I got distracted and lost my train of thought.
Instead, I ended up over thinking some recent decisions and as a result of my being extremely sleep deprived got very sad and lonely. I think I inflicted it on people that needed to not-deal with it too - like the Moose and like Kristy who basically has the most important interview of her life today. I think I managed to be mostly ok around her though.
I ended up showing up at Aubri's house at 2am and she took care of me. I think she might be one of the best people I've ever met. I mean it.
My other favorite person - the head of finance at ICTJ. He's just too nice to me.
I am so excited for this weekend. Going to clear my head. M is being uncear about the possibility of showing up sunday - I know he won't so I'd rather he just say he isn't. I don't understand why people do that. Gamey gamey gamey. It gets kind of old and boring. fuck 'im.
But yes, there will be cooking, running, poker, alcohol (including a case of wine that Dave is bringing) and sleep.
I got re-excited about Europe today. I leave in less than a month. I can't believe it. Especially since I still don't know what I'm going to be doing there.
Funny story - Kristy's new friend Radek said he had a friend that would like me. An Albanian. |

| | self-righteous | ] | Actually, I think it might have to do with something a good friend just told me.
A project he worked on just got published in the Journal of Neurscience. He's a programmer and wrote a really interesting program that was the foundation for this study that got published. He doesn't have a college degree - he's self-taught - and amazingly hard worker. Not to mention, a smart guy.
Life is what you make of it. Some of us don't necessarily test well on standardized tests, or have the type of personality that allows us to forsake a great deal in order to be the top of the top in academics - but if you're heart is in the right place and you truly work hard, you can succeeded with what you have. Helps to be smart though. :)
If I want it, I will have it, regardless of a degree from a top twenty law school versus a top thirty law school.
So, again, too bad GW. You're loss. :) |

Peace out GW. You don't know what you're missing ;)
What can I say? I kinda know none of the top twenty will take me.
And surprisingly...I think I'm ok with it.
This way I'm going to end up at a much more flexible and innovative program.
I have no idea why I'm taking this so well... :) |

| mmm kitten...bah law school |
[Jan. 27th, 2007|03:19 pm] |
have been with skes, staab, and kittens since Thursday. That has been very good. They feed me, pet me, and over all make me happy.
Going to Madison tonight to see Sulman and interview/tour/etc Monday morning.
Am trying to pretend that getting waitlisted at the lowest ranked school (American) I applied to doesn't mean anything for the other schools...it's not working. Found out this afternoon and now my nerves are shot. Great. |

I was actually told about this when I was last in the Czech republic - that many Roma (gypsy - although that is considered to be a deragatory term in this context) children are placed in schools for children with mental disabilities by virtue of simply being Roma. Czech Roma claim school injustice Roma children in the Czech Republic were "systematically and wrongly" put in schools for pupils with learning facilities, a European court has heard. The 1990s policy led to a disproportionate number of Roma (Gypsy) children in Czech special schools. The families of 18 Roma children have appealed to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg to label the policy discriminatory. Their supporters compare the case to the end of segregation in US schools. In one region, Ostrava, more than 50% of Roma children were placed in special schools. "We are claiming that the mere statistical results that show that there is such an overwhelming over-representation of Roma children in special schools - or rather there was at the time in question - is sufficient proof of inferior differential treatment," the group's lawyer, David Strupek, told Radio Prague. "It practically means that more than 50% of Roma children are mentally deficient, which is a conclusion that cannot be accepted." "But for their Roma ethnicity, would these children have been treated in the same way?" the group's lawyer Anthony Lester asked the court in Strasbourg, France. The Czech government has argued that since the schools were not set up specifically for Roma children, the system was not discriminatory. The government has admitted it has difficulties integrating the Roma community, but said it needed a political solution, not one imposed by a court. |

Yesterday, there were a few articles about the metropolitan area's blood shortage. Today, We got an email from the New York Blood Center explaining how serious a problem this is: NYC is experiencing one of its worst blood shortages ever. Currently we have less than a 2 day supply of 0- and B- blood and other types are not looking much better. The New York Blood Center, which distributes blood to almost all hospitals in the metropolitan area, is beginning to ration certain blood types and some hospitals forecast that they will have to cancel non-essential surgeries if there is not an increase in donations. If you would like to donate please go to our web site www.nybloodcenter.org or call 1-800-933-blood to find a location to donate. If you would like to organize a blood drive with your business, school, church, synagogue, mosque, etc. please do so. Donating blood is an easy and safe thing to do. The whole donation process takes 30 minutes and we normally give you a little gift and some juice and cookies at the end. Most importantly, donations save up to 5 lives and help patients with cancer, sickle cell, accident victims, transplant recipients, and other ailments. Each day we need almost 2,000 pints of blood to meet the needs of our patients. Without your help this can not be achieved. Here's a list of blood donation locations. |

Things are really intense at the moment. I will get into that at some point, but for now I want to discuss something superfluous and silly that I am frustrated about.
Gogol and FM are going to be touring together...IN AUSTRALIA AND JAPAN...the entire time I'm in Europe. I was hoping GB would at least do a little Europe tour - they've done them for most of the time I've been in NYC. boo on them. Gogol won't be performing NY at all apparently while they're home.
Then I went to the FM website and these are there upcoming US dates...
2/22 - Los Angeles, CA (Henry Fonda Theatre) 2/23 - Los Angeles, CA (Henry Fonda Theatre) 2/24 - Las Vegas, NV (House of Blues) 2/26 - Boulder, CO (Boulder Theater) 2/27 - Omaha, NE (Sokol Auditorium) 2/28 - St. Louis, MO (Pop's) 3/2 - Detroit, MI (State Theatre) 3/3 - Cincinnati, OH (Bogart's) 3/4 - Cleveland, OH (House of Blues) - 8hrs by car 3/6 - Toronto, Ontario (The Opera House) - 8.5 hrs by car 3/8 - Montreal, Quebec (Metropolis) - possibly too close to flight date 3/9 - Sayreville, NJ (Starland Ballroom) 3/10 - Washington, D.C. (Mid-Atlantic Shamrock Fest 2007) 3/11 - Charlotte, NC (Tremont Music Hall) 3/12 - Atlanta, GA (Roxy Theatre) 3/14 - Nashville, TN (City Hall) 3/15 - Tulsa, OK (Cain's Ballroom) 3/17 - Phoenix, AZ (Mesa Amphitheater)
The Bold ones are all out of any sort of driving distance and the italicized ones, the only reasonable ones, are out because I have to go to a wedding on the 10th - not to mention it's sooo close..
I wanna see at least one of my bands before I go... |

Apparently Bush is nominating a Muslim neo-con as US envoy to the UN. Ok, I understand the logic here on the administration's part but I'm just not sure how to read this.
BBC NEWS Khalilzad to be new US UN envoy President George W Bush is to nominate current US Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad as new US envoy to the UN, it has been confirmed.
Mr Khalilzad will succeed John Bolton, who stepped down last year after the Democrats refused to back him.
This is one of several changes made by Mr Bush in the run-up to the announcement of a new Iraq policy on Wednesday (0200 GMT on Thursday).
Reports suggest he will commit to sending in thousands more soldiers.
Mr Khalilzad, 55, has worked under two previous Republican presidents - George Bush Snr and Ronald Reagan.
If his nomination is confirmed by senators, Mr Khalilzad will become the first Muslim to become US envoy to the UN.
The Afghan-born diplomat took over his Iraq role in mid-2005 after spending 18 months as ambassador to Afghanistan.
A Washington insider, he [Khalilzad] is a neo-conservative with close ties to the Republican party
His expected appointment at the UN comes as President Bush prepares to announce a new strategy for Iraq.
White House officials confirmed the president would be addressing the nation on Wednesday on plans for "a way forward in Iraq and the global war on terror".
Mr Bush is expected to make a number of key changes in the US military leadership as part of his fresh strategy.
There will be a new head of US Central Command and a new ground commander in Iraq, officials have said. Story from BBC NEWS: http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/americas/6242053.stm
